Alter's Family Album

This picture was taken some time in late 1930's when the Esselin family were living on 10th and Lloyd…a section of a few blocks on Milwaukee's North Side that had a small concentration of Jewish families. There was a Kosher butcher on that street, and young Jewish kids would gather for a few early hour sessions of chatter on that block on 10th street. There is now a concrete Elevated Freeway that bestrides what had been that busy neighborhood.

This snapshot was taken in the living room of the flat that he and Becky lived in (The address was 2116-A North 10th street) from about 1932 through 1954. A cold water flat-there were four flats in the building, each with their own coal fired furnace.
