Esselin chose to deal with melancholy, sad, disturbing themes…death and isolation, because he felt that confronting such matters enabled him to triumph over them or at least mitigate their effect. And, he always strove to insert wit and inventive metaphors as a way of seducing the reader to come with him in the journeys into morbid realms..and even to enjoy the trip!
